The project attempts to prepare divers for cooperation across the Baltic Sea Region in the case of accidents. With coordination and common understanding of procedures, knowledge of general and specific diving competences and mapping of gaps, a solid and endurable search and rescue organization can be established in the Baltic Sea, making it a safer place to travel, live and work on.

Innovative management solutions for minimizing emissions of hazardous substances from urban areas in the Baltic Sea Region
The pollution of the Baltic Sea from urban areas is a common problem, which cannot be solved by a single country. The project will implement concrete substance reduction measures and make the Baltic Sea region a front runner in chemicals management at the local level.
Baltic Energy Areas – A Planning Perspective
To meet the ambitious climate mitigation and renewable energy targets in the region, there is a need to designate additional (growth) areas to renewable energy installations, such as wind parks, bioenergy units or solar installations. The project addresses the territorial challenges related to the transition towards low carbon energy systems with an increased production and use of renewable energy throughout the Baltic Sea Region.
Water Management in Baltic Forests
The project aims at tackling problems concerning forestry activities in relation to water quality. Special emphasis is set on clear water, nutrient export and hazardous substances, such as mercury. The project works on three main topics that all have a large impact on water quality: riparian forests, drainage and beaver activity.

Baltic Blue Growth - Initiation of full scale mussel farming in the Baltic sea
One of the most serious challenges the Baltic Sea is facing is eutrophication, the enrichment of ecosystems by chemical nutrients. The objective of the project is to remove nutrients from the Baltic Sea Region by farming and harvesting blue mussels. This may be a stand-alone measure to counteract eutrophication, but can also become a business model for the feed industry and be used in symbiosis with fish farms.
Baltic Blue Biotechnology Alliance
The project will bring together blue biotechnology actors from across the Baltic Sea Region to develop innovative marine biotechnology based products and services in response to the EU Sustainable Blue Growth Agenda for the Baltic Sea Region—a blueprint for harnessing the region’s strengths to boost innovation and growth in the maritime area.
Operational plans and procedures for maritime search and rescue in HNS incidents
100 – 200 incidents are reported involving commercial traffic but the number of near miss situations is many times higher. This, combined with the increasing amount of traffic in the Baltic Sea, the traffic intersecting at several nodes, difficult waters, and the harsh winter conditions in the northern Baltic Sea increase both the probability of a largescale maritime incident and the difficulty of conducting search and rescue operations.
The project objective is to build on the advancements of digital technologies and the potential of convergence between digital audio-visual content production industries, such as film and videogames and the education, tourism and health sectors. Techniques of audio-visual, interactive, participatory and multiplatform storytelling and forms of gamification can be used in service of the three sectors. There is a momentum for such inter-sector cooperation to open up the rapidly evolving avenue of ‘crossinnovation’.

The project aims to improve stakeholder capacity to reap benefits of the implementation of CNCs.
Decision Aid for Marine Munitions
The project aims at supporting maritime, defence and environmental administrations in making decisions on management strategies for dumped chemical and conventional warfare in the Baltic Sea and the Skagerrak to assess the risk associated with corroding warfare objects, such as dumped containers filled with munitions.
Baltic Fracture Competence Centre
The number of bone fractures and linked health disorders are going to increase in the future due to an ageing society. The project will set up local registries and link them together in one transnational data registry. Hospitals and companies in the Baltic Sea region will use the registry to identify needs and potentials for innovation within fracture management.
LNG Value Chain for Clean Shipping, Green Ports and Blue Growth in Baltic Sea Region
The project will focus on developing the demand and accessibility of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in the Baltic Sea Region. It will create a strategic approach to LNG development and a technology approach for consolidating the LNG value chain and it will provide skills and business partnerships for infrastructure development.
Mitigating the effects of emergencies in Baltic Sea Region ports
Harbours, terminals and storage facilities, including those for dangerous goods are often located close to residential areas, thus potentially exposing a large number of people to the consequences of accidents. The project aims at mitigating accidents and emergencies in seaports in the Baltic Sea Region, all handling large volumes of cargo and passengers.
Baltic Science Network
The project will foster the realisation of common higher education and research area in the Baltic Sea Region, and its research and innovation performance. The overall aim is to support the realisation of the European Research Area via intensified cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region, increase the research and innovation performance and strengthen the political ownership in the field of science policy.
MARELITT Baltic - Reducing the impact of marine litter in the form of Derelict Fishing Gear (DFG) on the Baltic Sea environment
Derelict fishing gear is addressed worldwide as a source of marine litter with extensive hazardous effects on the marine ecosystem. The project will be the first transnational initiative in the world providing an operation oriented, all target groups involved, all-in-one solution to turn a diffuse problem into a clear, transparent and apprehensible topic contributing to an enhanced international readiness to act. It will contribute to a Baltic Sea free from marine litter and hazardous substances and it will increase sustainable treatment of derelict fishing gear.
Coherent Linear Infrastructures in Baltic Maritime Spatial Plans
The project seeks to increase transnational coherence of shipping routes and energy corridors in Maritime Spatial Plans (MSP) in the Baltic Sea Region. This will prevent cross border mismatches and secures transnational connectivity, as well as efficient use of Baltic Sea space.
Innovative solutions to support BSR enterprises in product development aimed at raising comfort and safety of seniors home living
The project will give furniture companies inspiration and a common identity, it will enhance their knowledge and competences, and increase their capability to work in a transnational environment. Consequently it will enhance their capacity of innovation to create smart products adapted to senior needs, making the companies more innovative and competitive. This is a unique opportunity to raise seniors’ comfort and level of safety and at the same time enhance capacity of innovation.

The project aims to contribute to sustainable indigenous electricity generation, further integration of electricity markets and security of supply in the Baltic Sea Region by optimizing the potential and efficiency of offshore wind energy. It will present plans for a coordinated Baltic Sea offshore grid and significantly reduce one of the most important bottlenecks for the development of renewable energy sources in the Baltic Sea Region.
Stimulating smart specialization ecosystem through engaging SMEs in open innovation processes
The project focuses on bio- and circular economy as a cross-sectoral priority field of smart specialization in the Baltic Sea Region. The policy approach of open innovation based ecosystems calls for new tools of innovation management and follow up systems. The main objective is to improve competences and capabilities of innovation actors to apply a transnational approach to the implementation of their regional and national smart specialisation strategies.
Reducing nitrogen loss from livestock production by promoting the use of slurry acidification techniques in the Baltic Sea Region
Livestock manure is the main source of ammonia nitrogen emissions in the Baltic Sea Region. It not only threatens the status of the Baltic Sea, but also directly threaten human health. This project will promote the use of slurry acidification technologies throughout the Baltic Sea Region to reduce airborne eutrophication and create a more competitive and sustainable farming sector.
Water emissions and their reduction in village communities – villages in Baltic Sea Region as pilots
Discharge from households not connected to urban waste water treatment plants, called scattered dwellings, is the third largest diffuse of nutrient loads to the Baltic Sea. The main challenge of this project is to find the most cost effective and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment solutions for the households in order to decrease wastewater emissions into the Baltic Sea.
Baltic Sea Region Network in Doctoral Training in Nursing/Health Sciences
Personalised health care relies on a patient’s autonomy, trustworthy staff-patient relationship and a shared responsibility. Although it is an essential element of high quality healthcare, it requires streamlined training for health professionals. The project actively supports doctoral student exchange and establishes a closer cooperation and a mentoring programme among universities in the Baltic Sea region to leverage doctoral training and to build on the multidisciplinary research training.
Cultural planning as a BSR tool for co-creating collaboration and innovation among citizens and between citizens and authorities, on inclusive, sustainable development of city public space.
Social inclusion is a growing challenge for the Baltic Sea region. A better use of public space in cities is a possible solution to closer connect the people. BSRCulturalPlanning intends to adopt cultural planning as a method to stimulate interactions among varied groups of citizens. The project aims to bring together departments in municipalities responsible for cultural and urban departments as well as experts in cultural planning, and work together on better use of public spaces.
Creativity, Digital Innovation and Cultural Tourism: Synergies, Network and Capacity Building
CreaDigi&Tourism aims to facilitate the development of cultural tourism in the Baltic Sea region and its neighbourhood by increasing interaction of tourism operators and cultural and creative industry actors. With the main emphasis placed on peripheral areas of the region, the project will use gamification, mobile applications and virtual and augmented reality in order to boost individualised and interactive cultural tourism services.
Wood Biomass Production in Medium Rotation Plantations with Hybrid Aspen and Poplars
There is a growing interest in fast-growing tree species, such as hybrid aspens and poplars, especially in the context of bioeconomy approach becoming more popular. These trees have a great potential to constitute a significant share in the wood-based biomass in the near future. MedRoPlan aims to elaborate on developing and improving the production methods of the wood biomass with the use of hybrid aspens and poplars.
Evaluation of water quality and territories vulnerability in Daugava River Basin
The Daugava river is the second largest river flowing into the Baltic Sea, the basin of which expands to Belarus, Russia and the three Baltic States. Although its ground and surface waters are used for drinking and industrial purposes, a coordinated water quality assessment is still missing. QWATERA aims to strengthen institutional cooperation to develop harmonised assessment criteria of surface and groundwater quality so that good status of waters could be ensured in the future.
The integrated tourism offer on inland waterways
The international waterway E70 stretches from Antwerp via Berlin inland waterways node, northern Poland, the Kaliningrad region up to Klaipeda in Lithuania. The project aims to develop a harmonised inland tourism offer along the waterway and to team up business, local authorities, tourism associations and other involved actors to expand and better promote touristic services.
Baltic Urban Living. Brownfields regeneration in sustainable and resources efficient mixed-use areas for eco-social living and working.
A shift from the industrial to information economy that took place last century resulted in some abandoned and frequently contaminated areas in cities. Baltic Urban Living tackles the issue of these so-called brownfield areas and proposes assessment and spatial design tools in order to turn them back into high quality living and working environments. A common platform will help local authorities, researchers and other interested actors cooperate and exchange best practices on efficient handling brownfield areas
Impact of micropollutants emitted from municipal wastewater treatment plants on Baltic Sea ecosystems and assessment of cost-benefit of advanced treatment technologies in a regional perspective
A lot of chemicals used in everyday life, which are called micropollutants, enter the Baltic Sea in wastewaters and may exert a negative effect on the surrounding ecosystems. The project attempts to compile the available data of concentrations of micropollutants, assess the biological effects and ecological risk they pose as well as to explore new wastewater treatment technologies for efficient reduction of toxins and removal of micropollutants from water.
Green Public Procurement of Pharmaceuticals for the Baltic Sea Region
Pharmaceutical emissions to the environment are a major concern in the Baltic Sea region and beyond. GrePPP works towards a sustainable public procurement of pharmaceuticals to protect the aquatic environment in areas where pharmaceuticals are produced. The aim of the project is to develop and test criteria and tools for sustainable public procurement applicable to the aquatic environment. This shall incentivise more sustainable production methods, and, consequently, reduce harmful emissions.

Practical implementation of Health in All Policies in the municipalities for better health for all in the Baltic Sea Region
Today, life-style related diseases account for 80% of premature deaths in the Baltic Sea region. In order to overcome resource limitations at municipalities, the project strives to improve the capacities of public health managers and other responsible public bodies, together with the inhabitants, to better run and coordinate activities in preventive medicine and promotion of healthy lifestyle.
Supporting Non-technological Innovation in Owner-managed Manufacturing SMEs through increased capacity of business intermediaries
Business intermediaries, owner-managers and universities jointly develop and apply innovative tools and methods for business counselling that respond to the specific needs of owner-managers of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Owner-managers of SMEs tend to be driven by different considerations than SMEs run by employed managers, for example, their own family’s well-being, the employees’ situations and lack of time for developing their own managerial skills.
Development of Sustainable wetland management by Restoration and biomass utilisation of peatlands in the Neman river catchment to improve water quality of the Baltic Sea
Essential ecosystem services provided by the Baltic Sea, e.g. biodiversity, fisheries and tourism, are threatened by eutrophication caused by excess loads of nutrients to the sea. Discharge from rivers is one of the main pathways how nutrients get to the sea. One idea how to tackle the issue is to decrease the amount of nutrients leaking to the rivers by e.g. reactivation of already drained wetlands. The DESIRE project focuses on the numerous disturbed peatlands in the Neman river catchment and ways to restore some of them to act as wetland buffer zones.
Competent and Competitive Baltic Logistics
The project addresses a gap between the needed and existing logistics skills/competences and, consequently, strengthens the institutional capacities of different companies executing logistics duties within the Baltic Sea region. The project works towards upgrading logistics skills and competences of people involved in logistics and, in this way, improving an overall logistics performance in the Baltic Sea region and reducing differences between the different countries.
Ranging Mode for the Baltic Sea
The project launches the development of a technical system that allows for safe ship navigation when the established Global Navigation Satellite Systems fail due to interference or jamming. The partners test broadcast signals transmitted via radio beacons and other existing infrastructure. This serves to develop prototypes for ranging mode transmitters and receivers. The Baltic Sea is the first operational test area for this technology worldwide.
Co-producing and co-financing renewable community energy projects
When citizens join forces to set up, finance and manage energy production based on renewables in their region, we call it renewable community energy. The project gives municipalities, regional energy planning agencies and citizens’ associations across the Baltic Sea region the information they need to start and run community energy projects in their regions.
Advanced manure standards for sustainable nutrient management and reduced emissions
Agriculture releases large amounts of nutrients into the Baltic Sea, with a significant amount of emissions from animal manure. In this project, policy makers, authorities, advisors, farmers and researchers create, test and implement tools to determine manure standards for farming practices and policy instruments. The new manure standards are to improve nutrient recycling and reduce nutrient inflow in the Baltic Sea.
Learning Among Regions on Smart Specialisation
The project attempts to help the public sector in leading smart specialisation processes in their regions and to connect innovation networks across regions. It helps find solutions tackling the fragmentation of regional systems of innovation looking for entrepreneurial discoveries within such topics as blue growth, bio and circular economy, advanced production methods and technologies for energy efficiency.
Transformers for the future labour market
The employment landscape changes constantly and new occupations or specialties become much desirable whilst other disappear. The ability to anticipate and prepare for future skills requirements, job content and the aggregate effect on employment turns out to be critical for businesses. In order to develop the intellectual and social capital needed for the future, the project focuses on supporting the structure of “transformers”: a new occupation dedicated to helping young people develop necessary skills for the future labour market.
Hazardous industrial chemicals in the IED BREFs
The Industrial Emissions Directive is the main instrument on the EU level to control hazardous substances that are released from industrial sites. However, its reference documents, or BREFs, currently lack specific information on certain hazardous substances. The project aims to close this knowledge gap so that industry and authorities can manage hazardous substances being released into the Baltic Sea better.
Innovative Business Transfer Models for SMEs in the BSR
Many small and medium sized enterprises face a crucial moment when the business gets transferred, e.g. when the owner retires and a new one takes over. Every year, more jobs are lost due to failed business transfers than new jobs are created in start-ups. The project improves the competences of business support organisations in terms of business transfers. They jointly design and apply innovative tools to better support upcoming business successors.
Novel biobased plastics for sustainable packaging industry
About 311 million tons of petroleum-based plastic materials are produced in Europe every year and all types of packaging account for nearly 40% of this. There is an urgent need for a new era in the field of packaging in order to make them CO2 neutral and deriving from sustainable, biodegradable and suitable for composting sources. The project aims at looking for methods to replace fossil based non-degradable plastic polymers used as barrier coatings in paper and cardboard packaging with bio-based biodegradable polymers from wood biomass.
Contaminated sediments in the Baltic Sea: assessment, remediation and management revisited
In marine coastal environments, sediments contaminated by anthropogenic activities are a significant source of hazardous substances. However, there is lack of harmonised assessment methodology or common management protocols for contaminated sediments among the Baltic Sea countries. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop guidelines to combine chemical and biological measurements to obtain reliable evaluations of sediment toxicity. The project aims at creating a platform for analysing state of the art in the current risk assessment of contaminated sediments in order to set the basis for the harmonisation of methodologies.
Network for Hydrogen in Combination with Renewable Energysources
In response to challenges related to shifting from fossil fuel to renewable energy economy, the project sets up a multinational, multilevel and cross-sectoral partnership and a “knowledge hub” to jointly streamline cutting points between hydrogen and other sustainable and renewable energy sources, such as biomass, solar, wind and water. In this way, the project strives for a zero-emission energy and transport structure.
Baltic Cities tackle lifestyle related diseases – The development of an innovative model for prevention interventions targeting public health authorities in the Baltic Sea Region
Strokes, obesity, and heart and lung diseases are among the health challenges in Europe. This implies a new service development approach in the public health sector. The project helps public health authorities in cities around the Baltic Sea to better promote healthy lifestyle by developing and testing a model that public health authorities can apply in prevention intervention planning. The model combines methods such as focus groups, motivational interviewing, eHealth applications, chatbots and health games.
Rural RDI milieus in transition towards smart Bioeconomy Clusters and Innovation Ecosystems
The goal of the project is to support smart, sustainable and inclusive growth of the bioeconomy in rural areas of the Baltic Sea region. RDI2CluB aims to help innovation actors apply EU smart specialisation approaches to their specific field and region. The transnational partnership and network of the project plans to, for instance, support new business development in rural areas and create bio-business hubs to improve innovation management.
Baltic Sea Underground Innovation Network
The project establishes a network of underground laboratories across the Baltic Sea region, which works as an open innovation platform facilitating scientific technology transfer and best practices exchange. It improves access of small and medium sized enterprises to the laboratories and exploits potential for incubating innovative businesses in various fields, e.g. mining, tunnel construction, radiation shielding systems testing, and thermal energy production.
Energy production improvement based on dynamic mobile positioning data
Unused energy is still a major reason for the insufficient use of energy and thus waste of energy and resources. A more precise prediction of energy consumption would help to increase the efficient use of energy. ENERPO aims to elaborate tools and strategies to improve the prediction of energy consumption in three Baltic States. This could help to better match energy production and demand.
Accommodating of land-sea interactions into maritime and coastal planning in the Baltic Sea Region through blue-green infrastructure and ecosystem services
Land-Sea-Interaction and Ecosystem-Based-Approach are concepts that consider the human impact on coastal areas and strive for integrating aspects of sustainability and resource efficiency when it comes to maritime spatial planning. The project aims at improving the understanding and embedding the principles of Land-Sea-Interaction and Ecosystem-Based-Approach within the maritime and land-based spatial planning in order to contribute to cohesive management of the coastal areas.
Product Validation in Health
ProVaHealth stimulates cooperation among health laboratories in the Baltic Sea region, which test new products and technologies in real-life contexts. The project shares best practices to improve business models of the labs and helps open access to the services for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) from the entire Baltic Sea region to ensure health innovation and growth of health SMEs with global potential.
Biomarkers measure cellular, biochemical or molecular changes in human tissues, cells or fluids, and contribute to future diagnostics and treatment. The development of biomarkers is time consuming and expensive, requiring the involvement of industry from early stages to better direct the research. The BIC platform facilitates knowledge and best practice exchange, offering tools that support the various phases of a commercialization process and maturity assessment.
Laboratory network for testing, characterisation and conformity assessment of electronic products developed by SMEs
No electronic product can be successfully placed in global markets if it does not conform with international standards. This typically requires extensive testing of product prototypes. In the project, eight universities from the Baltic Sea region set up an innovation support network to provide testing and consultation for small and medium sized enterprises in the electronics sector during early product development.
New joint funding models by alignment of funding, increasing geographical flexibility of ESI-Funds within the BSR.
The project triggers cooperation to support joint funding models for matching regions working on smart specialisation strategies. The partners plan to continue and deepen the dialogue with the newly started Managing Authorities Network in the Baltic Sea region. The ambition of the partnership is also to increase the geographical flexibility of ESI-funds allocated to national and regional Operational Programmes in order to better contribute to the implementation of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.
Clear waters from pharmaceuticals
Active pharmaceutical ingredients are active medicines, e.g. hormones, analgesics and antibiotics, that contaminate the water and marine life if disposed into the Baltic Sea. Following HELCOM’s status report on pharmaceuticals, partners from seven countries work on tools and recommendations for policy makers, authorities and municipalities to map sources and environmental concentrations of these ingredients and propose methods to reduce these harmful emissions.
Sohjoa - Baltic Sea Region transitioning into eco-friendly autonomous last mile public transportation
Public transport is not as flexible and accessible as private cars are in the Baltic Sea region. The project works towards increasing the attractiveness of public transport by improving offered services and introducing automated driverless electric minibuses, especially for the first and last mile of the journey. It proposes recommendations for environmentally friendly and smart automated public transport and guidelines on the organisational set-up.
Low Temperature District Heating for the Baltic Sea Region
District heating systems are widespread around the Baltic Sea but are often outdated. Future-oriented energy supply includes low temperature district heating systems that lose less heat and use renewable energy and waste as heat sources. LowTEMP addresses municipal representatives responsible for urban and energy issues, heat suppliers, planners, engineers and energy agencies, and provides them with knowledge on technical, organisational and financial strategies to implement low temperature district heating.
Completing management options in the Baltic Sea Region to reduce risk of invasive species introduction by shipping
Shipping contributes to the uncontrolled introduction of invasive species to the Baltic Sea, which has severe environmental and economic consequences. COMPLETE supports the implementation of the new International Maritime Organization’s convention on ballast water management by triggering regional cooperation, developing risk assessment procedures for ballast water management exemptions and setting a monitoring system of non-indigenous species in the Baltic Sea.
Effective Financing Tools for implementing Energy Efficiency in Buildings
Energy efficiency projects are not typical investments: they do not result in direct revenues but rather in non-expenses, i.e. through energy savings. There is a great potential for cooperation and knowledge sharing among countries in the Baltic Sea region when it comes to lifelong learning: the countries have a lot in common when talking about the ageing society and education systems that do not fully correspond to the labour market expectations. Therefore, the exchange of good practices and joint development of new methods are crucial. The project focuses on building a structured dialog with key stakeholders in order to create awareness of the needed adjustments of the educational systems and adapt to a fast-changing labour market.

Recreational fishing in the Baltic Sea, which partly relies on sea trout, has untapped potential for growth and sustainable jobs. The project aims to showcase destinations for coastal fishing and advise on relevant policy regulations. It proposes solutions for efficient restoration of sea trout stock in order to boost the coastal fishing industry.
SmartUp Accelerator - Innovation Ecosystem to foster consumer cleantech markets in the Baltic Sea Region
There is a growing interest in consumer clean technology, which is about reducing the environmental burden of consumption and is related to resource scarcity, rising energy and fuel costs, digitalisation and automatisation. The project helps exploit arising business opportunities in consumer clean technology for small and medium sized enterprises, start-ups and intermediaries in the Baltic Sea region by shaping models for networking, partnerships and cultural cooperation.
Maximised Mobility and Accessibility of Services in Regions Affected by Demographic Change
With shrinking populations in many rural areas around the Baltic Sea region, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up public transport and services that depend on mobility, such as home care or home deliveries. The project aims to improve the integration of existing mobility structures with innovative transport solutions like citizen buses, flying nurses and fleet sharing to overcome these difficulties.
Better Efficiency for Industrial Sewage Treatment
Industrial waste waters are a considerable challenge for municipal waste water treatment plants as they require special treatment and management. In this project, local water utilities, waste water treatment plants, industrial companies and permitting authorities elaborate and test guidelines and procedures for a more efficient management of industrial sewage.
Baltic Cleantech Testbeds
New buildings are getting more energy efficient and adaptive with their own energy production; meanwhile the existing housing stock is getting older and loses a market value. The project aims at enabling the uptake of new business and financing models to maintain the value of existing housing stock along with introducing novel cleantech solutions, especially when it comes to heat and electricity consumption, ambient temperature and usage patterns of electric appliances.
BSR electric - Fostering e-mobility solutions in urban areas in the Baltic Sea Region
The project aims to enhance the use of electric vehicles in city transport systems such as public sector fleets, public transport and bike sharing in order to reduce CO2 emissions and pollution. The partnership of public authorities, business, academia and NGOs explores the potential of e-bikes,
e-buses, e-ferries and other e-vehicles. The project guides municipalities and transport planners and operators as well as public and private fleet managers in integrating e-mobility into urban transport strategies.

Business incubator organisations are crucial supporters for entrepreneurs, start-ups and small and medium sized enterprises that drive economic growth and create jobs. Currently, Baltic Sea region countries lack an efficient tool to share information on maritime spatial planning and, in this way, to support each other in the fast and consistent elaboration of maritime spatial plans. The project paves the way for a standardised and commonly accessible spatial data by elaborating on needs and conditions for setting up such a database, and supporting the collection of best available maritime spatial planning data in the Baltic Sea region.

Since 2014, the satellites and sensors of the European Copernicus programme have delivered Earth observation data free of charge to anyone. The wealth of data holds tremendous potential for new services in the environmental, transport, energy and other sectors. The project qualifies regional science and technology parks in the Baltic Sea region in running tailored acceleration programmes for small and medium sized enterprises in the emerging Earth Observation market.
Accelerating production of forest bioenergy in the Baltic Sea Region
There is a growing demand for forest biomass from by-products of the wood industry to be used as a source of renewable energy. The project exploits logging residues, which are usually discarded after forest harvests, and small trees that are cut during forest thinning. Along with guidelines for using new technology, the project compiles information on wood energy potential to shape innovative business models and develop small-scale bioenergy plants in rural areas of the Baltic Sea region.
Sustainable urban mobility and commuting in Baltic cities
People living in the suburbs usually commute into the city centre by car. Offering an alternative combination of various transport modes, including bike and car sharing, is a way for cities to achieve a more sustainable, environmental friendly commuting system. The project helps urban and transport planners assess, plan, and integrate alternative mobility options into transport plans and policies of cities and municipalities.
Baltic Smart City Areas for the 21st century
The idea of the project is to bring together authorities, energy providers and citizens within their city districts to find and apply the best solutions for saving energy, thus decreasing CO2 emissions. To achieve this, the project enables local and regional authorities from cities around the Baltic Sea to run cooperative planning processes. Such processes help authorities to work together across different sectors, to understand citizens’ motives and barriers, and to activate relevant players in city neighbourhoods.

Games are the most dynamic creative industry worldwide but business support is often unspecific or targeted at communications technology or media. The project prepares business incubators to effectively support game start-ups. It tests how gaming can be transferred to other industries such as the health sector. It also initiates a change of the business framework to make it more favourable for the game industry.
B2B distribution model supporting local food sector in Baltic Sea region rural areas
Local food producers still rely mostly on direct contacts to consumers as they often have difficulties in reaching catering, food processing and retail sectors that tend to rely on large food supply chains. The project aims to establish a business to business distribution model that supports local food networks in rural areas of ten countries in the Baltic Sea region and to ensure smooth and short supply chains, opportunities for growth, and improved business performance.
Cities.multimodal – urban transport system in transition towards low carbon mobility
The project wants to make it easier for people in cities around the Baltic Sea to combine walking, cycling, public transport and car-sharing as an environmentally friendly alternative to driving. The partners develop and apply an approach to sustainable urban mobility planning for such multimodal transport that is easy to adopt in other cities. It includes publicly visible mobility points and smartphone-based travel planning as well as a planners’ handbook and a toolbox to manage mobility.
Baltic Sea Region Integrated Maritime Cultural Heritage Management
BalticRIM aims to integrate management of cultural heritage in and at the Baltic Sea into maritime spatial planning. Coastal and underwater cultural heritage such as ship wrecks and archaeological sites can help brand cities and regions, attract talent and foster tourism. Currently, such heritage sites are not systematically included in maritime spatial plans across the Baltic Sea. The project helps to identify and designate maritime cultural heritage zones by bringing heritage managers together with spatial planners.
Using innovation procurement and capacity building to promote Circular Economy
A traditional procurement model does not consider re-use or recycling of purchased goods or services. The project promotes a circular procurement model, which takes into account the lifecycle of products throughout the supply chain. The development of tools, exchange of best practices, training and building capacity among procurers, suppliers and policy makers for circular products stimulates the development of new business models.
Eco-efficiency to maritime industry processes in the Baltic Sea Region through digitalisation
ECOPRODIGI kick starts international collaboration between industry and academia to reduce the ecological footprint of transport vessels during their lifecycles through digitalisation. Research organisations mediate between technology developers and shipping companies, shipyards, suppliers and ports. Focusing on ferry and roll-on/roll-off shipping (i.e. wheeled cargo such as trucks and railroad cars), the partners analyse environmental inefficiencies, digitally simulate performance, and design business models for digital solutions.
